VIEW Smoking Him Out A.B.Frost's lithograph is a charming grandfather and grandson scene smoking out the squirrel. This is the only squirrel hunting scene to make the main streams. VIEW Woodduck Decoy by Alcide Leroux A very rare decoy. When you do find them, they are usually distorted and unappealing. This decoy is perky, vivacious and flirtacious. Carver from Montreal, Ledroux, was a trapper, sculpteur and hunter - passionate for nature. He began carving at age of 12. This decoy has carved wings detached - unique style, patterns robust and round. Paint complete reality - colors super imposed, a lot of emphasis on different layers of paint - wet on wet. Exceptional and rare! $2,500.00
VIEW Gardner Snipe Decoy Alfred Gardner hunted, played cards and carved in Hingham with a group that included Joe Lincoln. Gordon Mann taught him to shoot; Russ Burr taught him poker. Lincoln declared him a hopeless carver, but Joe missed the folky appeal of birds with their eyes on the front of their foreheads. And Fred beat him at poker.

VIEW Allston P. Burr carvings We have recently acquired six new carvings by Shorty, Allston P. Burr of Hingham, MA. Allston was the nephew of Russ Burr. The carvings include: Woodcock, Quail, 2 Geese, Pair of Owls, and a Widgeon.

The Woodcock, Quail and Widgeon are stamped Allston P. Burr; the owls and the goose have "Hingham" written on the bottom; and other goose just has "Goose" written the bottom. A nice collection or sold separately. Priced somewhat differently for those stamped or signed. Please call!

VIEW Ben Holmes Black Duck Decoy Ben Holmes was one of the founders of The Stratford School in CT. This is a classic configuration, possibly repainted by Holmes or Shang Wheeler - as birds were often painted yearly. I like this black duck a lot and is branded on bottom - from the famous E. VIEW Benjamin D. Smith Black Duck Decoy Benjamin Smith 1866-1946 from Martha's Vineyard was a carpenter most of his life. He was born in Provincetown. "Keenest powers of observation in superb technique" as quoted in MV book by Murphy. Splendid example of refined technique of the best of MV carvers. Original paint - somewhat worn. Like the vast majority of Vineyard birds, this one has been used as a working decoy. Head is turned about 40 degree angle to left and leaning forward.

VIEW South Eastern MA Flatties These flatties were incorrectly identified as carved on Cape Cod and as Yellow Legs. They were, however, carved in Westport, MA and one is not a Yellow Legs, but is a Golden Plover. The unknown hand who made them has been identified as Captain Bessie from Westport. These flatties are lively, lifelike and engaging. These are $4,000 for the three; or $2,000 each. $sold
VIEW Captain Bessie Plover This is one of the flatties - shorebirds- that is in "New England Decoys" by Delph said to be yellow legs, yet this one is distinctly a Plover. Also it was said these were Cape Cod birds, yet Capt. Bessie definitely carved this plover and was from Westport, CT. This carving is good - $sold
